10 Times Hey Arnold! Got DEPRESSINGLY DARK
Hey Arnold! was one of the best nickelodeon shows from many of our childhoods. However, as kids, many of us overlooked some of the profound themes that existed throughout the story. At times, the show shined a light on dark realities that exist in the real world. Abandonment, addiction, negligence, war, poverty and crime. Hey Arnold! was an incredibly mature show that got quite dark at times. Today we're counting down the 10 Times Hey Arnold! Got DEPRESSINGLY DARK. #HeyArnold #Nickelodeon

Hey Arnold is probably one of the best cartoons for kids ever, it was funny no matter what generation or age you were. All the characters were relatable and the lessons were real. What made it good was that it didn’t treat kids like little idiots, but like miniature adults who could understand that world, kinda like Mr. Rogers.

My level of sadness and appearance to others matches nowhere up to most of the kids from Hey Arnold. Yes, I'm loved by family, but it's like I just feel lonely outside of them. *I try to spend every bit of time I have with them* , but there's been separation after my mother and my aunt on my father's side fought last year. It's been haunting me, because I love all of them, despite the things said. Sometimes I try to shade out my father's side, but they think I don't love them. When I say I don't want to visit *part* of my mother's family, they mention the fact that they are biased when it comes to me and my younger cousin. Next is leaving some of my childhood friends behind. After graduating, we talked alot, but I had a HUGE argument with one friend. That literally tore me into depression (mainly because of stress and being misunderstood/teased at my high school) and made me delete their contacts, and taking a 7-8 month break from them. I added 3 of them back, and I made it a promise that I wouldn't mention the one I fought with (keeping her name discreet). So right now all I listen to is sad music and watch more anime to comfort myself. (Rap/emo rap/hip hop) NB - I'm 13 with a different school system, and where I come from, it's either junior high/high school. Also, relating to the teasing bit, I'm actually seen as a HUGE ass by others, and more vulnerable to them, EVEN when I share with them and comfort them. That's the minor reason. Major reason is because of my weight (I'm 180+, but I do basketball). To all the kids and other age group suffering, you're not alone in this world. Don't be like me, because I'm literally here losing hope in the world.

These things are actually very commonly referred to in cartoons. Often times, these kinds of issues and others will be viewed within a show, most of the time going unnoticed because the producers, though needing to explain these things, would only have just masked it with metaphorical meanings to avoid demonitization. Now, think about that for a minute, people: Companies directed at catching the attention of young, attentive audiences, end up avoiding demonitization by making sure no one understands that there's real issues in the world with their own individual ways to be solved. They get bad reviews for explaining life's troubles to those who don't have their own explanations, because people want to "stay away from that negative stuff." It's been true for a long time that the world has its problems, but most people don't think about them because it makes them uncomfortable. It makes them uncomfortable, because that means they'd have to see how much others hurt, and end up worrying-- and, as a result, making an effort to help. That's what that discomfort coming from viewing these conflicts comes from: not just hating the problems, but hating that there are lives going through that; the hate, meant for help. Having people see these things, even if it bothers them, is just part of being human, having the right kind of feelings; that kind of discomfort means you'd make it better right away if you could. The problem is, the only things people do to "make it better" nowadays is to just change what they're watching. Now, for a little attention-grabber: what's worse, seeing someone concerned regarding these issues? Or seeing someone watching these "disturbing" subjects with no emotion at all? Yeah, look at it that way. Everyone's noticed that vibe before, whether it's in public or not-- that creepy personality, lacking emotion for others' suffering. the common cartoon villain, right?

For anyone who grew up in the hood, Hey Arnold is actually based on the inner city ghetto environment. I grew up in South LA, when I watch Hey Arnold, it reminds me of everything where I live at with school system fails, kids slackly off of not caring for education, dysfunctional family issues, bullies, crime rates, and addictions. It brings the statement of how the inner cities really was in the America, which it was based in the ghetto.

This is , a surprisingly dark cartoon that me at a young age didn't understand, and the fact that the neighborhood that the group of kids live in is so messed up and so cheery and charmful at the same time .Hey Arnold is there to teach kids about how the world has a happy mask on but when you take that mask off, in which you have to do sometimes it reveals the demonic side of the world that nobody ever wants to see, but you have to look sometimes and that proves that almost all the kids in that town are in their own state each of mentle illness which is a growing threat to the population over the past centuries ,and which affect not just kids in that neighborhood, but also adults, For example Helga's parents. The way that her parents care for their children have an impact on their lives which could turn them into some messed up people when the grow up, but unlike Helga's parents Arnold's parents weren't like that, the only reason that he lives with his grandparents it because of the sick people in the world that want to watch it burn down into a crisp. You can't let people like that bring you down in life, You have to stand up and if nobody can help you with it , find a way to do it yourself and get help for the ones that you think that are suffering from mentle illness. Hey Arnold!, doesn't air just for entertainment, but aswell for a purpose, telling you that the world isn't just sunshine and rainbows and that the world is crule, this thought might make some children in the neighborhood think about suicide, but just remember, you were put down on earth for a reason. I've been through that state of mind, and i know others who have been there to, being suicidal is a tough battle. Just remember, You matter.

Mr Hyunh story was depressing. He couldn't get out of Vietnam because of the dictatorship instated there at that time. Harold was also a very interesting character, he was antisocial, I think his first friend was actually the cat he rescued. Patty was also a bullied character, verbal bullying which she translated to agression. I liked when Harold started to go out with her, and defended her against the bullies.

Hell, Rugrats had episodes like "I Remember Melville" to help kids process death and loss in their lives. I think the relatable content that current cartoons are missing is still needed.

There's also the Veterans Day episode which really hit me hard. Arnold's grandfather Phil gets his funny war story, but Harold's father's story is where the heart of the episode resided: He was a war veteran, but hardly a Rambo-ish war hero. He got drafted, was a lousy soldier, shot his CO in the leg and was essentially sent off to die by delivering some documents in a jeep right across a battlefield. But there he found a wounded soldier and saved his life by stopping the bleeding, allowing that soldier to survive and start a family of his own. No, he never got a statue, Medal of Honor or Purple Heart, but in the eyes of one man and his family, he's the greatest hero ever.

Pigeon Man. A lot of people have theorized that his "flying away" at the end of the episode was actually him jumping off the roof due to his home being destroyed. The reason we see him flying away was due to Arnold's mind blocking out the traumatic of witnessing someone commit suicide.

To say nothing of the fact that when she was caught humming the bridal march and throwing rice on the couple she then escapes prosecution and likely death by hanging by commiting suicide and tossing herself out the window.
