About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

So so happy I accidentally found this video. I am 3rd year beekeeper in England and I still don't know nearly enough. We keep saying that the bees don't read the books. They always surprise us and don't do what we expect them to do. I really enjoyed your video and learn't so much from it. I am going to share your video with my bee keeping group in Liverpool and other beekeeping groups on the internet if that's allowed. We have something similar to your horizontal hive here called a top bar hive, but it doesn't take the normal frames. You just put a bar at the top and the bees pull their own comb in a triangle shape. the hive is shaped like a triangle. I love the idea of your horizontal hive. using frames. I have back problems and I think you have just solved them. Thank you so much. Definitely a bee-youtiful day here in the UK. Will definitely be making changes

Bee-autiful video!!! Thanks so much for posting! Ha this is my first time commenting on you tube (I had to Google how to! Lol) I so appreciate what you said at the end about sharing information for the greater good! Feedback tho- I skipped over this video several times because the title seemed negative and I didn't want to feel scrutinized for making mistakes as an American Beekeeper. Glad I got over it and watched it.

question for bee guru's , i had a hive swarm the other day ,got lucky and caught it , then about 10 day's later had another swarm from same hive i also caught it , but the bee's in this swarm were acting strange from the start ,not flying around at all and there were at least a hundred on the ground that couldn't fly , hive was new , after a couple days they all just seemed to die on the ground in front ov the hive ,the one's that flew off were never seen again at that hive at least , any idea what was wrong with them , the hive they came from seems healthy and the swarm that didn't die seems healthy as well ..

I already have the 3 books that you referenced, so do not add me to the giveaway.I have one Layens swarm trap up, and a 28 frame horizontal hive, (also Layens), that I built last fall. One nugget that I picked up is how to place the lemon grass vials "upside down" in the swarm trap. I did this backwards!!! Thank you guys for posting this video!!! :-)

Thank you all so very much for this video. I used to keep bees but gave up due to COPD and lifting the heavy hive boxes. I had seen different horizontal designs that I did not care for. The horizontal hive you all introduced me to today I very much like and will be enjoying my hobby once again. Thank you all so much! Also one trick that I had learned was if someone calls for a swarm to be removed from a bush or tree limb I would spray them down with sugar water before I would snip the limb loose and they would stay in the clump or swarm with very minimal flying around and just lay them into the hive box for transporting.

The balding recipe - one of my Ukrainian girlfriends recommended a mixture of minced onions and chicken poop massaged into the scalp. This was supposedly directly from a monthly printed home remedy compilation called babushka. I am tired of hair. I would rather find something to make it all fall out. I guess I'm getting old.

It is a beautiful day! You didn't say anything about what you need to do to protect yourself from getting stung when you check the hive. I have never kept bees but it sounds like something I would like to try just for my own use. I have racoons and skunks that visit at night. Would they open or damage a horizontal hive? Could you put a lock on it to keep the lid from opened by racoons?

Bees withstand cold easily if the hive has proper area. Its almost impossible to survive in the hives shown in the video, - way too much space, badly prepared for winter. Main killer of the bees is humidity + cold. If the humidity level is high in the hive, bees won't survive. Another case you can find dead bees after winter is basically weak family and obviously diseases and parasites like varroa.

Just discovered you guys while searching BR-channel for more info about treatment free beekeeping and watched this video having no idea if it would help. It was a great surprise to find the wonderful 'Dr Leo' was co-hosting! Thank you for putting together such an interesting and helpful beginner beeks' guide'! I've subscribed so I can see what else you have to offer that we can put to good use. We actually collected two treatment free packages yesterday and later today we'll be installing them in horizontal hives we constructed ourselves, based on plans found on his excellent website! This was a great refresher on what to do and not do...
