hi Austin, love your tech tips and i have managed to upgrade my laptop ssd and ram with your channel. I took a old laptop and used cloudready and converted to a kind of chromebook and it is much faster than with windows 10. Great to surf the net and other small tasks. I wanted to install virtualbox with android but have no clue how to do this and cannot find a step to step guide how to install this. I am not a computer wiz. Can this be done, could you advise or you could do a step by step guide how to do this... thanks for your time, keep up the great work... i follow you from Portugal.

I use the same machine at work, as one of our video editors swapped it for the 'Modern' style mac pro. It works great, I've upgraded it over the years and it now has 2x3.33ghz Xeons which I picked up for cheap, 32gb of ecc memory and an RX580 gpu. I also added a Sata3 card for my SSD to run off and a USB3 one. With the latest version of the firmware you can even boot from NVME drives with an add-inn card, but I don't really need storage that fast. It's great for spinning up various vm's and I'm happy that it's still getting MacOS upgrades. Funnily enough we got some of the top of the line MacBook Pro's in with the new Vega GPU's and my old MacPro beat it pretty handily CPU bench wise. The gpu side obviously was worse, but I have a feeling that the MacPro would be better for a sustained CPU/GPU load due to not thermal throttling/power throttling like the MacBook would. I'm sure it would beat it if I shoved my spare Vega 64 into it but I'm not sure if the PSU would cope with it haha.

I got my mid-2012 chassis with a 6 core 3.33GHz tray for $50 at a thrift store. Of course, I still had to invest in RAM, a Metal compliant GPU for Mojave, hard drive brackets, and drives.

+MT T $200 for a dual 6 core CPU configuration with 32 gigs of RAM, now that's a deal you got there, especially if you can get it to run Mojave with a compliant graphics card. And, running an OS that's relatively more secure than Windows 10 as well as using ECC RAM, I would hope that it would be more stable than your Core i7 Dell.

I have the 2010 Mac Pro with the 2.93ghz 6 core Xeon, 32gb RAM, and original Radeon 5770. It runs Final Cut and Photoshop like a beast. However, I am planning on upgrading the graphics card soon so I can update to macOS Mojave. Although, it's from 2010, it's still a great computer, sadly you don't get this caliber of a computer from Apple anymore.

But I am having issues with my Mac Pro that it restarts on it's own whenever I am viewing videos on youtube. could this be a problem with the graphics card or what? Don't fully populate all the 8 slots..... it actually slows the system down. Basically you should only have 3 memory boards in each grouping, since slot 7+8 & 3+4 are actually multiplexed....... means you get hit for the refresh signals twice. Also get that SHIT off the inbuilt SATA it's only 3 Gigabit... so ur wasting the SSD.........

This feels like a huge amount of money to spend for the performance upgrade. I think you’d have been better putting the fastest compatible 6 core processor in, or selling the machine and buying one that has dual sockets already. 64GB of RAM is great, but maybe not the best way to go. The built in sata controllers are slow, which you point out by helpfully bypassing them and editing from an external SSD for the test, so it’s not really a fair test at all. Also you could probably put a faster GPU in there, you can get a 1080Ti to work if you need the power. By all means throw 8/10/14TB hard drives in the built in bays, but boot from a PCI connected SSD. You can build a ‘cheap’ external USB 3.1 gen2 NVME drive/RAID and max out that connection (or cheaper if it’s RAID SATA M.2), or go thunderbolt 3 if there’s a card or 10gig Ethernet for a fast scratch disk for editing. I don’t think you got your money’s worth on this upgrade.

Im curious why you didn't use the 5690 Xeon. They are just about the same price and you can definitely notice a difference,ce. Its not a huge clock jump at 3.46 Ghz, but across 12 cores and with a few differences from the 5680, it makes a big difference working with 4K. One other note, I have a GTX1080 Founders edition ( Nvidia ) and it is slightly faster than the new ATI cards. Just have to learn how to deal with the Nvidia web drivers. Otherwise, great build.

Why did you only get the 3 ghz upgrade? That is like a $20 dollar CPU at most, lol. A 3.33 6 core is faster and only $50, and then there is a 3.46 6 core which is quite a bit faster and under 100 bucks each. You also don't appear to be aware that it is better to run 3 sticks of ram on each side rather than 4. That is pretty big performance hit (around 5%). I get around 26k multicore in Geekbench. I get around 144k in Geekbench OpenCL and 78fps in Cinebench with my rx-580 (although the r15 GPU test favors NVIDIA and PC a LOT due to driver issues). I get 1610 in Cinebench r15 CPU.

Wouldn't you be better off sticking to 48GB RAM to take advantage of the 3-channel bus? If you populate all 64GB it will drop down to 2-channel. Sure it depends what you need it for, and whether speed is more important than that extra 16GB. Personally, my 3,1 has 64GB slightly slower mem than it can handle because it was literally 1/3 the price of the max speed. But the difference was not as big as 2ch v 3ch.
