Carla Makes Baked Eggs in Tomato | From the Test Kitchen | Bon Appétit

Join Carla Music in the Bon Appétit Test Kitchen as she makes baked eggs in tomato. The trick is getting the eggs cooked so that the whites are set and the yolks are still jammy-starting with room temperature eggs is key, so soak them in hot water for a few minutes if they're cold from the fridge.

    I decided to make this just after watching and it was very good! My only problem was not enough tomatoes, so the eggs were more fried than poached and there wasn't a whole lot of that tomato-y tang, but this is definitely one I'll come back to! I think next time though I'll try it with a few more spices to make it more like shakshuka.

    I didn't have everything on hand so I substituted a few things. Instead of olive oil I used heavy cream Instead of grape tomatoes I used just plain grapes I didn't have red pepper flakes so I crushed the red berries from a box of Cap'n Crunch I had eggs but they were hard boiled so I just dropped them in My kids cried when they saw it. My wife said something about me not peeling the eggs Then the local mental health department came and took me away..... again

    Growing up in a family of 8, dinners were naturally on the inexpensive side and large. Don''t know where it came from but, when my Mom had leftover spaghetti sauce she would poach eggs in it. They were served on toast topped with parmesan. If there's anything my ex's took away from our relationships it was this recipe. Now I'm teaching it to my grandkids.

    Regarding the charades story. I remember once, I was in an acting class, and we were supposed to do a game of charades. Not sure why. But I got 'Friends' and drew a blank on how to act that out. But realized I could break it down to fri-end. True, it's not how it sounds, but it is how it's spelled. No one got it. But it turns out I was actually supposed to clap four times. I think the teacher was confusing charades with Name That Tune.

    Shakshuka in Arab countries is considered one of the low budget and low-skills-required dishes, it’s popular in all Arab countries, it came originally from Tunisia, from the Amazigh culture, and the Ottoman empire(Turkey now) helped spreading it to all Arab countries since they were all under the Ottoman empire. Of course since the Zionists occupied Palestine and called it “Israel” (because God gave it to them in 1948), they started to claim the Arabic food and call it Israeli. So don’t be surprised if you find another video on BR-channel titled “Authentic Israeli Shakshuka recipe” or even Israeli Hummus or Falafel! Although current Falafel and Hummus restaurants in Palestine has been open over a hundred years before the occupation(so called Israel).

    This is als really good with onions instead of chilli powder. Bake the onions a bit first, then put in the tomatoes. It's a great comfort food dinner (a bit of heinz ketchup on the side tastes great with it too!)
