Charter schools don't bring both parties together. Most Democrats don't like them because they have the teachers unions dicks so far up their asses and they don't want kids to have choices. *_Looking at you John_* God I FUCKING hate this man's politics.

Don't believe the hype: charter schools are just another way to attack the existing public system, keep the rich rich, and ensure that universal and continuing education are never mentioned.

Kids were better educated in the 1800s by the 9th grade, than most college grads are today.Isuggest the video on youtube.Stupid in America with John Stossal. It was on like 20/20 or one of those news shws like 15 to 20 years ago,and we have gone way down hill from there.I also suggest the video The Deliberate Dumbing down of America and college conspiracy. The only truth and knowledge is in the King James bible, and perhaps the dead sea scrolls, and other missing books of the bible. The rest is BS and doctrines of demons. What is automatic Writing?Where a demon controls the arm of a person.A demon writes a best seller(Darwin`s Theory of Evolution),(Steven Hawiking books) and someone with aspberger syndrome, gets the credit for a book they did not write.Same with inventions. The technology comes from the fallen angels and demons that inhabit people.HUmans are not inventing squat.See the video The Book of Enoch.See Trey Smith`s video on the Nephilim.Read the book of Acts,KJV.ee all videos by Win Worley,Derek Prince and JOhn Echardt.Get into the King James bible.

I went to a charter a school in seventh grade. My school didn't close six weeks into the school year but I did transfer to the local public school six weeks into the school year. One of the first warning signs was and this is a real quote from the principal, the words "autistic children are an unnecessary drain on our resources". A boy from the special ed class I was in was expelled for that exact reason. Since I didn't know I was autistic at that point in time it wasn't as terrifying a thing to hear then as it is now, but it still made my blood boil when I heard it. The reason I left was because if I hadn't left of my own accord I would have been expelled, which is not a good thing to have on your permanent record. I was suspended for; tardiness, inability to follow instructions, eating in class(even though I have low blood sugar problems), and, this is true, WALKING THE WRONG DIRECTION IN THE HALLWAY! I was bullied for; my weight, being poor, being gay, having gay parents, and being special needs. Not all, or even most, of this bullying was perpetrated by students, most of it was the teachers. I had one teacher call me a monster and a freak, another a menace to her students and one even called me a retard. I don't know about the financial aspects or even the academic shortcomings of charter schools but I do know that the only children welcome in most of them are neurotypical, quiet, well off, straight, and part of a nuclear family. I am none of those things and neither are most people.

I’d like to use the example of the private prison system in this country, which is the worst prison system in the world, to explain what could happen to the charter schools. Any time there’s profit involved, some greedy as...le, will figure out how to scam the system.

No, education should be based on making money, OVER educating kids. Medicine is another area where making money needs to NOT be the driving force. Education, medical care, law enforcement, fire departments and all undertakings relating to the good of all, in a free and democratic - DEMOCRATIC country should be for ALL THE PEOPLE and not for profit.

It's their money, not yours. Parents should get to choose schools for their kids. Nobody is forcing your kid to study in a charter school. If you prefer public schools, enroll your kid there. Moreover, school choice works well in Sweden and several other European countries.

Essentially, charter schools are places of extremes. They're either extremely successful or extremely flawed, and there is no middle ground.

    • Kevin Li

      Kevin Li

      11 dias atrás

They are middle grounds, but it depends on your state's regulations for charter school. Most of the places that they show are pretty lax about what charter schools can and cannot get away with. If you live in a state where charter schools are highly regulated. For example, if you live in California like I do, just look up whether your charter school has WASC accreditation. It's basically a program of self reflection of your school, setting goals, and trying to carry them out. As long as you're trying new things to try to help students improve (it doesn't matter if it actually works), it's usually renewed. Even the continuation school in my area with a 80% attendance rate (most others in the area have closer to 95%) with a graduation rate of less than 50% and students who sit around and do nothing still gets renewed because they're actively trying to encourage attendance and offering services like free PSAT and SAT.

Charters are a run around "vouchers", funneling tax money to private companies. I'm for vouchers, including charter schools. 1) any student applying must be accepted. 2) expulsions can only come after a criminal conviction for a crime committed on campus during school hours. One day suspension is the maximum for all other on-campus acts, and detentions are the maximum penalty for anything that happens outside regular school activities. 3) If government money is accepted for a student, that money received must pay for the student in full, including any required items (books, uniforms), as well as any extracurricular activities (sports uniforms, music instruments). Those rules (or something close) apply to public schools (except for music under #3, in many cases, though I've been to some public schools that still have a music program). So apply those rules to charter/voucher schools, and nobody would want to run one. Because competing on an equal footing is hated by capitalists.

Pro Charter comment. As a parent you try to make the best choice for your kids based upon what you can do for them. When you have "choices" you make a choice. Many devoted parents do not have money, but they have resources in the form of time and effort. Many parents have only one option for their child, which is put their kid in a school that will fail them. For them this is not some political position, but a difficult reality. They need a vehicle for that time and effort-A Charter School that encourages Parent involvement can be that vehicle. Note, so can a Public School-unless it doesn’t--then what do you do. The devoted parent with limited resources can sacrifice much if they have the option to do so. Let at least give them them that option. Instead of no option with the qualifier we think it is unfair and we will try to fix it. If you believe that then Fix it before you start taking away options. The Charter school that I am familiar with gave limited resource households a choice that made an immediate difference. Start with a Fact: The kids that attended that charter school on average scored slightly higher then the State average, but dramatically higher then the public schools in the immediate area. Even more important IMO was that devoted parent's children achieved at a much higher level. Yes that comes from my anecdotal experience of parents and their children. There is not a statically category of devoted parents to non-devoted parents. I will add on to my anecdotal experience that those "Energetic" parents in poorer demographic areas will fiercely defend Charter Schools because they know without that option it would have been much more difficult to impossible for their kids to achieve and get the same opportunities. I am sure there is a lot of truth in what John Oliver points out. I am not surprise that there is corruption or poorly administrated Charter Schools-I would be surprise if there wasn’t. The truth of bad Charter Schools is not the evidence needed to get rid of all Charter Schools. The fact we know of bad Charter Schools means there is the ability to take corrective action (Close them). What type of corrective action do we take against Public Schools? To those against Charter schools : Talk to parents who send their kids to Charter Schools. Talk to “devoted” parents in poorer demographic areas. Hard working parents with limited resources. Talk to them about their reality and not some theoretical thought experiment. Objective data is also important: Look at averages not just the mean, but mode values and distribution. Compare Charter Schools to the immediate surrounding areas and make sure to consider demographics. IMO A Charter School’s “PROGRAM (their Charter)” will not make that big of a difference (I am skeptical of a silver bullet program). Here is the real value Charter Schools provide. In Charter Schools you have the culture of students building relationships with students that also have parents that encourage them to do well in school. Those parents are also more likely to promote respect, kindness and treating others with dignity. Kids feel both physically and emotionally safe when attending school. They feel encouraged to do well by parents, teachers and peers.

So, while I get it, Oliver has painted the picture that charter schools are mostly bad. Sure, his point was that we should do better with regulation and what not and expounding on the negative supports his point. The problem with that people aren't objective (myself inlcuded); they'll consume all of these negative stats, barely consider the positive ones and develop an uninformed opinion that charter schools are bad. Sucks. The KIPP Charter School Network (of which my children attend) is phenomenal and on par with any high-level private education. In support of his closing argument, we need to do a better job with regulation... but I say, let's not throw the baby out with the bath water. They're looking to close charter schools across the nation instead of improving the regulation process, or mandating the improvement of standard public schools to meet, or exceed the performances of high-quality charters. Sucks. And yeah, in America, where capitalism reigns supreme, education IS a business. It's not a traditional business as lives are at stack, but it's still a business. Want more kids to come to your school? Be better, then charters won't be necessary.

I had incredible writing math and French teachers, and my French teacher was also my education specialist who’d meet with me every month to talk about class and life, took about 10 different music classes as well as drama for two years. It really let me express my interests and gave me a lot of freedom. But there was a big discrepancy between students. Some were creative and school oriented others would spend most of the time goofing off due to lax authority. It’s really a case by case basis. But I can’t dis charter schools because my and my sisters experience was fantastic and I’m so glad I didn’t go to regular high school

I would like to say the vast majority, but I do not have that type of data. However, 100% of the people I know with actual Charter School experience, have similar thoughts and feelings. Even people critical of a particular Charter School believe in the concept of Charter Schools. I know Education professionals that were originally very critical of Charter Schools come to believe that they have had a positive impact on education as whole--even for kids that do not attend Charter Schools. With thousands of Charters schools there is going to be some awful horror stories.

I have no why anyone pushes charter schools as a good idea (besides the people directly profiting from them). It's yet another instance of the mindless Reagan/libertarian mantra that "privatizing automatically makes everything better!" There isn't anything at any level that points to charter schools being better than public schools: not conceptually, and not in practicality. The only thing that private companies are more efficient at is funneling as much money as possible to the people on top, usually by doing the bare minimum to keep the money coming. It's inherently giving you less bang for the buck because it wants to divert as large a chunk of those funds to the owners as possible, a chunk that WON'T go towards the school. Free market capitalism works when you're selling luxury widgets. NOT public education and utilities.

@Frederick Calabrese Well, I'm not sure that anything can live up to the hype of the right or left. That being said. Public schools are very much hit or miss. In some communities (typically those with money) Public schools do very well. However, most cities can't say that. Many cities are totally failing, and have been for decades. If Charter schools sometimes work, some of those kids will have a shot. That's where we are at. e have to throw as many ideas as we can against the wall. For starters. Then we need to look at what changed when failure started to occur. We can look at demographics, regional economics, teacher quality, accountability, teaching methods, everything. I don't see an area that IS NOT in need of improvement. In some areas, Charter schools work.

In most states they also have to belong to the teacher's union. Its the licensing and union protection of tenure that keeps terrible teachers around. Didn't even talk about how Charters get to chose who they want in their schools. Then they get to kick the students out that they don't want by a certain date, still keep the money as if that student was attending their school, and finally send them over to a public school that doesn't have the funds because they weren't counted in for the school year.

I went to a charter middle school before they started to become popular. I liked it but it had less than 95 students and only one hall way. Its great to focus on education and trying to skip a grade. I had failed a grade and stayed back in elementary but the charter school helped me get back to my normal grade. But when it came to creativity and socializing, it was a super killer. When I got to high school, I felt like i was missing something from middle school.

Yep, it’s a $hit4ole country. Medical insurance and costs are horrible but most people think single payer systems don’t work, college costs are ridiculously high compared to Europe, school standards are lower than Europe, shootings every day it seems, wages are stagnant or decreasing, we pay 6% to buy/sell real estate which is much higher than U.K., the quality of most clothing sold is not what it was twenty years ago so people have to constantly buy more ( Europeans laugh at us for that), etc. People here say that no single payer systems will ever be here and I laugh because Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, etc. have been here for decades and we aren’t dying because of death lists. We have to make sure all doors are locked and look over our shoulders because of theft and violence. Oh, our homes are wood with brick on the outside. Tornadoes and hurricanes demolish them. They don’t build them like that in most European countries. The whole race thing is so tiring. We call black people African Americans in it in the U.K. they are called British because that’s what they are and nearly everyone there doesn’t give two shakes about what color anyone is and yes, the U.K. had slavery too. I won’t go into the thing currently residing at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Anyone reading this will say that if I don’t like it here then I should leave. Well, yes I agree wholeheartedly and am working on doing just that.

I went to a religious charter school in Ohio and I can say that shit was RANK. Not even religious anymore, and that school had terrible education. They charged $5,000 a year, but let in low income students free. They preyed on the Somali Community and even though we made up 2/3rds of the population they were still racist and prioritized Arab students. Imagine if your english teacher taught English to a Non-English teacher; that shit would never work out. That is what they did for Arabic teachers. I took Arabic for 9 YEARS and I still can’t tell you anything but 1 sentence. They had equipment for labs given by the state for FREE but they didn’t even bother with making a lab, so any 8th grader would graduate with little experience in science. Teachers would bounce from teaching 2nd Grade Science to 8th grade Math with bare bones teaching. I was a Gifted student so I skipped a grade, but all I got was intense bullying from the same students for years (very few new students came after 1st grade) and all they could do was have me sit in the principals office for 2-3 periods a day. With all of the money they got from the government and fucking TUITION there were little to no supplies, facilities, or qualified teachers. The worst part of the whole thing is that they are STILL OPEN and trying to open a high school. Moral of the story: Avoid charter schools, go private or public not some random bullshit in between

@cirrus Private schools have utterly failed in most large cities. It isn't just a case of lack of funds. Its corrupt unions, corrupt officials from both parties, a lack of accountability, terrible teaching practices that coincide with dropping performance and standards, As well as a lowering of expectations for graduates. The Democratic party can take a good deal of the blame because of their close relationship with teacher unions and other special interests. But truthfully, all solutions are required. Among them, charter schools have been effective. John Oliver the skew specialist that he is didn't mention anything about the millions of kids who have only Charter schools to thank for a great and competitive education. That's because people on political wings are only interested in arguments and not solutions.

I actually graduated from a charter high school. I was the worst my mom used to call it a "Nazi Training Camp" because they were trying to snuff out almost any way we could be individuals. When we found loopholes to express ourselves they made a new rule forbiding it sometimes in the middle of the year. Also the money from our senior gift just disappeared and no one has a clue what happened to it. That money was raised by the students and we raised $8000 more than we needed so what happened to the extra we still have no answer.

@cirrus Socialism is not simply a political position it is and has also been one of belief. Or Rather the lack thereof. Godlessness is a tenant of socialism and the most important aspect of it. One can only come to worship the state if God does not exists. Hitchens was a socialist spiritually, not politically. The single most important aspect of implementing socialism or communism, is atheism. As a testament to this I will point to the socialist and communist movements from the beginning of the 20th century to now. Russia and China are obvious as are the nations of southeast Asia. However even France and Germany have had a massive falling away from the church since the encroachment of atheism and the subsequent resulting socialism. South America is now experiencing the same. So . . Red Pill all the way.

@Kyle Stubbs I think I'll keep it where I left it. He is a Globalist Socialist and he is a participant in a conspiracy to undermine anything that keeps this country strong and elevates its status or cement our constitution. Like the rest of the deep state media,he is just a propagandist whore to a globalist elite who pays him handsomely for deceiving people. Its Germany 1933. As far as his British status, the reality is that the Royals (who still hold power) have propped up this same notion of Globalism and socialism. You can use Justin Trudeau as an example of the duplicitous politicking. Canada now has a government that is so socialist, that they have effectively killed freedom of speech with the transgender proper pronoun bill. Its a HATE CRIME to opt NOT to call someone by the desired personal pronoun. This is the kind of horse shit assholes like Oliver want to brainwash the weak minded into accepting here in the US. There isn't 1 subject that he has covered that doesn't play directly into the hands of the Globalists. So I'll criticize him any way I see fit when it happens to also be the truth. If you don't like that, then you must be one of them.

@Dr. Red Pill Well, that's not "truthing" him, that's ad hominem. John Oliver doesn't represent Great Britain as a whole, and you can't judge his statements on American charter schools if that's your only metric. Also, for the record, he's _covered_ Brexit on his show at least three times. If you want to judge him for being British, take it there.

England is Brexed, and its economy is trying to recover from more than 30 years of increasingly failed socialist measures. He probably couldn't get a job in the UK. Wait, are they even a UK anymore? Or is it simply England now. What Kingdom? The only Kingdom they have anymore is Justin Trudeau, and he is a fucking moron.
