I admit I disliked the old david so much, but Ive found admiration for this new David who knows a person destiny is to grow and evolve, we can't never be the same person we were 10 years ago. But to see a famous person, a legend of TV who wants to be better, to know more things, and whos humbler and humbler....... wow, I find that incredible and makes me have a new found respect for the human race.

The Harvey Pekar segments were good for exactly the reason Dave is lamenting them -- because he (Dave) was uncomfortable. Had he tried to go with the 'mature,' 'politically enlightened' Dave that he morphed into late in his career, it would have lacked all interest and tension. Were Pekar alive today and you put him on Kimmel or Colbert it would suck. Just be two guys agreeing on everything with one a lot richer and the other a lot more eccentric than the other.

What Dave was trying to say is that objectively analyzing your past is something that's just plain difficult to do. And if you disagree or think he's whining, it's probably because you're not past your prime yet. But if you asked him about his inspirations or influences -- or his son, and I'd imagine he'd talk your ear off.

in 2007 I was in Dave's hometown of Muncie Indiana the day he was giving millions for a building at his and my almamatre. Ball State University. 3 female friends and myself were eating lunch outside a downtown bar. Dave showed up with his son and a few bodyguards. he talked to us outside, let us take some photos with him and then he said, "hold on, I need to pee, watch my son while I go in". He came out said "love ya folks " and left. the bartender came out with only us there at 1 pm and said "Dave just laid 500 dollars on the bar and said you guys drink and eat on it today". Nicest celebrity ever.

I go back to Ernie Kovacs, one of the most brilliant minds on a TV set, so this is a serious remark: Letterman was the best TV host of all time, except for one. Oh, no, not second place to Johnny; get serious. But this might throw you: first place, all time, was Steve Allen. I think Dave would have no problem with that assessment.

Dave, like most men of vision, fails to recognize what made him great. He knows better than me but as a younger spectator, I get nothing but nostalgic pleasure watching his old NBC shows on YT, the anniversary shows, etc. That show was an irreverent, genius moment in time that will never be duplicated. And Dave's wrong about Harvey Pekar. Pekar was a workable, unpleasant semi-diversion to Dave's NBC show. But having Pekar on every night theoretically, would have been a boring cringefest.
