Dry Ice Cold Air Intake: Does Frozen Air Make More Horsepower?

The first mod for a car you probably maybe ever head of was the infamous "cold air intake". Aside from making rad induction noises though... did they actually make more power from cold air? Or was it a restriction thing? We build an overly excessive contraption to really see if cold air makes more power.

Put all the mods on it for one final run. Give it a grave digger paintjob as you drive it into it's final resting place. Also, the next vehicle for scumbag labs should be a surplus military Humvee. You should slam it like a ratrod, and see how fast you can make it on the stock diesel motor.

I think its more than that. When dry ice is melting it puts out co2 that replaces oxygen that is needed to create fire in the combustion chamber. At the dyno there is not sufficient air flow to replace the oxygen dry ice replaces with co2. At higher speeds more air with oxygen gets super cooled aswell and that inturn gives you the power increase. Cool the fuel and it creates more power. Cool the air and it creates more power.

Made less power because your using dry ice, which is frozen carbon dioxide,.....which displaces oxygen. More Carbon Dioxide=Less Oxygen to burn with the fuel=Less power. Thats part of the reason it sounded so rough, it wasnt getting enough oxygen to fire correctly. The CO2 from the dry ice was suffocating the engine, literally. This is a reason why they use CO2 fire extinguishers. Yeah the idea of a super cold intake is interesting to test and I would love you guys try a repeat of this experiment if possible. Try just regular ice....or them gel pouches. Something that will cool the air without adding anything but cold, but not killing the oxygen either. (I know its probably already been covered in comment below.)

This one's easy - you needed to use an isolated cooling loop instead of air over dry ice to prove/disprove extra HP from cool air. You introduced CO2 into the intake and that doesn't burn. Now if you had passed the air over liquid oxygen instead, that'd give extra oxidizer and a heck of a boost. LOX isn't hard to acquire, but it would be hard to strap on a roof - probably best to try a truck.

Dry ice is frozen co2 so you can guess what thay smoke coming off it is, co2 is a fire surpresant and its used in fire extinguishers so what your doing is flooding the engine with something that doesnt burn. 2nd you do not want cold fuel in a carbureted fuel system because it doesnt atomise and mix with the air as well. 3rd try pure oxygen instead that would be interesting

  52. Brad Traeger

My bet is the long burn-out cleared all the concentrated CO2 out of the coolers so you actually got more O2 into the engine on the track. If you would have isolated the CO2 vapors from the air you're trying to cool, you would have only been concentrating the air without adding lots of extra CO2. Didn't they do something like this on a Ford Lightning back in the day with the AC system?

  53. Trevor Buechner

    Trevor Buechner

    21 dia atrás

Why didnt you run it through a heat exchanger inside the coolers? Not a single one of you guys know dry ice gives off carbon dioxide? which is like the opposite of oxygen and how to make more horsepower? Any extra hp you made had to have been a fluke. Also why not just run your entire intake through like one or two with like galvanized metal ducting inside the cooler. That way no co2, less coolers, and more cooling efficiency because no hot air from the engine bay?

If you would use the dry ice air as the only intake it should theoretically make more as observed on the track run as the pressure of the air pushed in to the fan increased due to the cars speed therefore bypassing the air coming from that filter(as you have a filter and then the dry ice apparatus connected to intake it is mix the air up what if you use the filter to pull in air to the dry ice box and it goes to the engine without a break as the engine would have a vacuum effect on this setup then if you include that fan it might work like a small cold turbo) just a hypothesis
