I PUT BOX DYE TO THE TEST (IS IT REALLY THAT BAD?)

Hi Beautiful! Today I put box dye to the test. I have always been curious if this stuff actually works. Doing a direct comparison to professional color felt like the only way I could really uncover the truth!

Proof he *did* switch the mannequins: At 9:39, go full screen and look at the "professional" hair colour (on the right). You can faintly see a mark on the lower part of the chin. The other doll does not have this mark. At 16:50, Brad is still claiming this is the "professional" hair colour. (You'll have to pause before the chin get's covered by hair) But there is no mark on the chin. At 19:35, you can see the chin mark on the now "box dye" hair colour. So, I guess box dye is better than professional after all.

Box Dye is really bad for your hair, my hair is all screwed up because of box dye, even tho getting my hair done professionally and them putting that mixture (whatever it's called) that takes the yellow/orange out of your from box dye. My hair is still messed up. I haven't touched box dye in like 5 years.

You should try more vibrant colors🙁 I remember the first time I dyed my hair with box dye, I used the Loreal copper orange..I put it on my virgin hair and the results were beautiful!! And my hair was still very very soft and my curls were still very bouncy.. And eventually it started to fade out so, my roots were dark brown, the middle copper-ish orange then the tips faded blonde somehow 😛🙄 but i loved it!! Beautiful hombre look I had, it looked professionally done or just natural lol anyways, Then 2017 came 😐 I decided to dye it fire red.. Myself 😂 I thought I had it down. But the ammonia smell was so strong and I had used 2 boxes and I got worried.. After that I really had a love hate relationship with it for a while 😭 I work in construction, so the only way I liked to do my hair was splitting my hair down in half then to brush it back in a bun or ponytail.. But when I did it, I then noticed I didn't dye some of my roots and it looked uneven AF 😭😂 I was so DONE. I was so upset at the results. I just used my helmet to cover it and it was cute for a while but then I just got tired cuz I couldn't keep up with my roots so I just dyed it back copper like 5 months later and I have the same copper hombre look i had before lol but I love it! But I regret it cuz I lost the moisture in my hair and I should've treated my hair way better 😫😵

TBH, Feria is like, literally the worst box dye I've ever used. It never comes out looking like it does on the box, no matter the shade, it BLEEDS every single wash and stains everything, no matter how well you rinse, no matter how careful you are with what products you use in your hair. IT SUCKS. And that color booster? I don't get the point. It boosts NOTHING. But it does stain. So bad. I've used that exact shade and the only thing it did was make my scalp magenta. I've never really been able to afford to go to a salon, and it's something I regret, because box dyes aren't the greatest, as you've shown. If you ever do this comparison again though, skip the Feria. It's simply worthless.

When companies first made box cakes all you had to do was add water. However they found 'stay at home mums' didn't think adding water was 'enough' in the sense of feeling like they had cooked a cake. So now you have to add butter, eggs etc to give yourself the illusion that you're baking from scratch. I wonder if the added in oils etc for the box dye is the same mentality.

There are some serious errors in his determination of a number of the facets of hair colour. L'Oreal made the box dye, why didn't he use the L'Oreal Professional equivalent to compare their performance? In fact, working in a L'Oreal Professional Colour salon, in an emergency, such as the supplier back ordered your colour and you just ran out and you NEED -THAT- colour for your client thats comming for her appointment in 2 hours... You can call up L'oreal Professional and explain your situation, and they'll tell you what colour to get in box dye that corresponds to the product youre mixing, along with some formulation tips that usually warrant using your own developers instead of the one included. For example, Luo Colour can be substituted with Feria box colour. Majirel is replaced by Preference, etc etc. It takes some professional tweaking to get the colour to take just like the professional equivalent, but if you know what youre doing, it will turn out just fine. Now, for usability, this guy has no idea how to use an applicator bottle, which makes me question his professionalism. As a professional, you should have the capacity to perform all application techniques, as even some professional colours, suggest an applicator bottle application. Usually it's for lower viscosity "slippery" colour applications, but for extremely resistant grey coverage you can apply standard cream or gel colour with a bottle and use it to "flood" the root with colour, way better saturation then laying on the colour with a brush, as using the brush does apply it accurately, but also can smear the colour off the section, resulting in less saturation, and inherently, pigment density in the final product. It takes a professional to know exactly what application strategy would be best. Now for timing, box colour assumes the user is going to be applying the colour themselves, and that usually takes AN ETERNITY. Spend 25 minutes applying colour, then 25 minutes processing = 50 minutes processing in the hair. 10 minute professional colour application time, 40 mins processing = 50 minutes total processing time. Now for consistency, yes, there is a difference, in that box colour is formulated to spread easily through the hair and get all over everything so you dont miss any spots. Professional colour has a tendency to stick where you put it, unless you specifically formulate otherwise. And the professional word for "like shampoo" is "an emulsion". Another issue I have is the usage of mannequin hair, that is the farthest thing from what natural hair takes colour like. It may be made with human hair, but it has no cuticle whatsoever, it's been removed, it's exceptionally dry due to the absence and removal strategy of said cuticle, it has been completely bleached then repigmented using fabric dyes. What client on earth has a scalp that can endure such treatments, let alone hair like the results of them. A more appropriate client would have been a virgin hair weft, coloured and evaluated as swatches like professional Colourists do, like when doing hair samples from the actual client when contemplating radical colour processes. How many of those have you done? And who taught you virgin colour application? Roots first, then pull the colour through the ends? On a mannequin it doesn't matter for above mentioned reasons, but on virgin living clients? The first 3/4" of hair grown is MORE susceptible to colour due to A)

    • JDobs92

      JDobs92

      20 horas atrás

Incomplete keratinization *the newer hair hasn't quite hardened up fully* and B) the heat activation of the scalp. Professional virgin application of "permanent" oxidative hair colour dictates that we apply colour to the midshaft and ends FIRST, then go back, sometimes after a waiting period, and apply the root formula. Or, apply a milder root formula and a stronger end formula to account for the unbalanced lifting of the hair shaft, but that can compromise the cuticle depending on the colour used and the hair type, so, again, you must use your professional discretion. If you didn't do either of these steps and applied to roots FIRST, then ends... you would have some glowing hot roots within the first inch or so of the hair shaft. Because that looks professional. Im going to go out on a limb and assume that you've never done a virgin colour application because all your clients have had previous colour, then yes , previously coloured hair is more susceptible the virgin new growth so then yes, you treat the roots FIRST, then the ends, otherwise you'll overprocess/overdeposit your ends. My advice, if youre going to do colour at home, you can do the first one with box colour for the first time, then use cream colour for root retouches. When the ends fade, it really depends on your hair type/ type of colour used as to how to refresh your ends. My opinion the general purpose best end refresher for hair that took colour properly in the first place? A lower pH semitransparent demipermanent colour refresh, but this might be difficult for home users to acquire/make the colour technique too complicated to do yourself. Just a thought.

Now I understand why my hair got so damaged during my red-hair-phase. Mom would slap box-dye all over my whole head of hair whenever all I needed was a root touch-up. Why? ‘Cause she’s a cheapskate who didn’t wanna take me to a salon for color touch-ups, but also didn’t wanna waste the box-dye by only using some of it. … at least my hair is healthy, now…

First of all, I'm not a big fan of box dye myself, but you legit went with one of the worst lol You could have done some research on the better rated lines of box dye and given it a fair and decent chance. Second, you can definitely remedy some "problems" with box dye if you really want to make it work. Most people use leave-in/finishing products anyways, so how shiny it turns out immediately after the dye is washed out doesn't matter in the long run. My mom's been using box dye for almost 50 years and if you do it right and treat your hair well, it can look beautiful. Lastly, stop judging people for not having money for professional treatment. For people living paycheck to paycheck, $5 can be a huge difference, and not understanding that makes you look like you're completely out of touch with reality. Going to a salon is a luxury, not a basic necessity. Nobody NEEDS to pay you for basic color, so stop turning your nose up at people who need to save those $5 for groceries, diapers, or bills. (And Boy, $19-$13 is $6 not $5, who taught you your money math?)

That's how magical a good professional is. I REPEAT A GOOD PROFESSIONAL. please make a research on who you're going to trust with your precious hair. Not every box dye is really bad and not every pro is good. (but still I recommend going to salons. especially for those loving to play with colours like me. I understand box dyes are cheap but they really aren't good for your health, plus they stain literally forever and no bleach can lift them out.)

Whether the heads got mixed up or not, the health of your own hair should be the most important criteria when deciding what dye to go for if you don't wanna end up bald by the age of 40. I could bring up advanced chemistry to prove that, but I'll just say box dyes are incredibly harsh. Why do you think salon grade dye needs more time to process than box dye? It's because box dye opens your hair cuticle much faster and wider than professional hair dye which is way gentler on your hair. As a matter of fact, box dyes opens the hair cuticles at such a wide angle it's almost impossible to close them back, resulting in coarse, damaged-looking hair. Also, the color particles in box dye are way bigger (as opposed to the minuscule color molecules in salon grade dyes) which makes removing box dye a complete nightmare if you ever want to change your hair color. But you don't have to believe me, or Brad or any other stylist telling you to stay away from box dye. You are completely free to ruin your own hair for being a cheapskate.

My friend has always used box hair dyes for the simple fact of her hair being extremely thick. Because her hair is so thick box hair dyes are much more affordable and convenient to use for her. When she finally did get her hair professionally done it costed over $100 and the color didn't last long. So compared to an average $20-$30 for box hair dye it definitely was better than spending over a $100 dollars for dye that didn't last long.

I was a little confused by the color results while I was watching the video, but I didn't realize the heads were switched until I read the comments, and then it all made perfect sense to me. I just wanted to suggest to Brad that maybe you should review the video and your memories of the day and I think you'll realize that it's possible, and likely, that the heads were swapped sometime during the middle or end stages of this experiment and then you could just admit to that possibility and apologize to your viewers. It will feel embarrassing, but it will make you human again to everyone, because right now you're separating yourself by not responding to the concerns that people are commenting to this video about the heads being "switched." The head you have labeled as "Box Dye" in the end of the video looks like professional work using a beauty supply store dye. There is an even, consistent tone and it's almost natural looking. The head you have labeled at the end of the video as "Professional Color" looks bright and garish like box dyes do just as soon as they're on the hair. There's a pretty vibrancy, but also a harshness to it. You can see the intensity of the color processing by looking at blazing color left behind on the plastic scalp. Those bright box colors impress at first, but they always fade and tarnish. I'm not gonna suggest that anyone hold you too accountable for the mistakes and shortcomings within this video. I just don't think science is your strong suit yet, but I do appreciate the effort you made to investigate these 2 different, polarizing methods of coloring hair and I was entertained by the video as usual. The reason box dyes 'fail', is because DARK haired people use the dyes for lighter colors or bright like colors which makes the tones come out wrong or not bright enough. If you want the colors to come out correctly, you NEED to basically BLEACH the hair to a blonde color before, then apply the color you want. It ALWAYS works for me and never failed. Box dye is A LOT cheaper than salon and I've gotten my hair done at a salon and THEY MESSED IT UP and didn't do what I wanted and I ended up having to not only pay for a bad hair cut, but also a shitty dye job. Please don't crap on people who use box dyes/non salon dyes.

Makes me kinda mad that the tools cost $20 but the service is $170 plus tip. Salons are just so inflated and in the end it's just hair. I'm not going to spend a small fortune trying to upkeep that shit professionally.

Box Dye really isn’t that bad. I’ve used Box Dye and Professional. I just wouldn’t recommend cheap box bleach dyes. NEVER bleach your hair with that shit. But he dye it’s actually okay, the 99p ones don’t damage my hair, but why’re are very strong smelling. But when i buy £5 Schwarzkopf Dye it absolute great. Totally recommend.

I've got a question! I'm a hair model and the thing i notice is the colors the hairdressers call 'permanent' don't stay in long and change in hue and color really quickly - mostly within 1 week- After this happens I normally just buy a box of herbal vegan hairdye and those normally last A LOT longer! WHY does this happen?

Why the hell did you choose wella color of all color? I hate the wella line. Of course it’s going to look like a level 3/4 you used 20 volume. If you used 10 Vol it would be a true 3. I understand the vibrancy of the 20 but if you mix 10 and 20 vol equal parts you’ll get the vibrancy and true level 3. Let’s be honest here, If your an actual hairdresser you know just as well as I do that Sally’s color is not professional color. Wella is a professional brand but it’s a real low grade professional brand. You would get much better results using 3vv from joico at a lower price. All this proves is it’s not as true to color. Try lifting all that box color out vs the wella color and show how it lifts because I have so many clients using box dye and wanting to go blond and they don’t understand why they won’t get that in one session.

"I have used box dyes for years and my hair is fine. It just naturally stops growing, is darker at the ends, feels like a sponge, takes forever to dry, breaks off into my brush, has no shine without product, has black or orange undertones, and feels thinner than it used to. But those problems are just my bad hair. The box dye works great."

Does anyone know if the brown red box dyes cause red bleeding when you sweat? I know colors such as purple, blue and bright red bleed all the time when you shower and sweat and was wondering if more normal dark cherry brown reds bleed too.
