Almost every one of those are balk moves. They all slightly lift the front heel right before they step off. If you do it quick enough they won’t call it.

    • Blake Bulleh

Alan Hess these pitchers all slightly lift the front heel, set it down WITHOUT MAKING A PLAY, then they do the pickoff. It is a slight move that you umpires rarely pick up which is probably why you have no clue about it. The free foots heel comes off the ground, reconnects with the ground, then they disengage with the pivot foot. Slow the video down and you’ll see it. If if was all one motion it wouldn’t be a balk. I’m telling you it is a deliberate move RHPs do that we practice to perfect so you umpires don’t pick it up. We know it’s a balk, but apparently our umpires don’t hahaha

    • Blake Bulleh

      Blake Bulleh

Alan Hess I said he is allowed to step and throw to 3rd or 2nd. Just not to 1st. A RHP would have to disengage. It literally says it in the rules you posted.

    • Blake Bulleh

      Blake Bulleh

      2 horas atrás

Alan Hess I read all of those rules. I understand them fine. If you think a right handed pitcher can come set, lift his front heel while set, place it back down, then throw to first, you are insane. With your understanding of the rules a righty can pick up his free foot and just step towards first without disengaging and throw to first like a lefty. I’m not going to sit here for hours and decipher every section of the rule book, asks your umpire friends. They’ll enlighten you.

    • Alan Hess

      Alan Hess

      2 horas atrás

+Blake Bulleh Wrong. As I said you don't understand the rule. It would be perfectly legal for a right handed pitcher to step and throw to third. This could not be done if moving the free foot first was a balk. You are misinterpreting the rule.

    • Alan Hess

      Alan Hess

      2 horas atrás

+Blake Bulleh You don't understand the rules at all. Lifting the free foot followed by a step toward the plate or a base is legal. Of course putting it down without making a play would be a balk. Since you are too lazy to look them up, I will post the rules covering pitchers; 5.07(a)(1) The Windup Position The pitcher shall stand facing the batter, his pivot foot in contact with the pitcher’s plate and the other foot free. From this position any natural movement associated with his delivery of the ball to the batter commits him to the pitch without interruption or alteration. He shall not raise either foot from the ground, except that in his actual delivery of the ball to the batter, he may take one step backward, and one step forward with his free foot. When a pitcher holds the ball with both hands in front of his body, with his pivot foot in contact with the pitcher’s plate and his other foot free, he will be considered in the Windup Position. Rule 5.07(a)(1) Comment: In the Windup Position, a pitcher is permitted to have his “free” foot on the rubber, in front of the rubber, behind the rubber or off the side of the rubber. From the Windup Position, the pitcher may: (A) deliver the ball to the batter, or (B) step and throw to a base in an attempt to pick-off a runner, or (C) disengage the rubber (if he does he must drop his hand to his sides). In disengaging the rubber the pitcher must step off with his pivot foot and not his free foot first. He may not go into a set or stretch position-if he does it is a balk. (2) The Set Position Set Position shall be indicated by the pitcher when he stands facing the batter with his pivot foot in contact with, and his other foot in front of, the pitcher’s plate, holding the ball in both hands in front of his body and coming to a complete stop. From such Set Position he may deliver the ball to the batter, throw to a base or step backward off the pitcher’s plate with his pivot foot. Before assuming Set Position, the pitcher may elect to make any natural preliminary motion such as that known as “the stretch.” But if he so elects, he shall come to Set Position before delivering the ball to the batter. After assuming Set Position, any natural motion associated with his delivery of the ball to the batter commits him to the pitch without alteration or interruption. Preparatory to coming to a set position, the pitcher shall have one hand on his side; from this position he shall go to his set position as defined in Rule 5.07(a)(2) without interruption and in one continuous motion. The pitcher, following his stretch, must (a) hold the ball in both hands in front of his body and (b) come to a complete stop. This must be enforced. Umpires should watch this closely. Pitchers are constantly attempting to “beat the rule” in their efforts to hold runners on bases and in cases where the pitcher fails to make a complete “stop” called for in the rules, the umpire should immediately call a “Balk.” 6.02 Pitcher Illegal Action (a) Balks If there is a runner, or runners, it is a balk when: (1) The pitcher, while touching his plate, makes any motion naturally associated with his pitch and fails to make such delivery; (2) The pitcher, while touching his plate, feints a throw to first or third base and fails to complete the throw; (3) The pitcher, while touching his plate, fails to step directly toward a base before throwing to that base; (4) The pitcher, while touching his plate, throws, or feints a throw to an unoccupied base, except for the purpose of making a play; (5) The pitcher makes an illegal pitch; (6) The pitcher delivers the ball to the batter while he is not facing the batter; (7) The pitcher makes any motion naturally associated with his pitch while he is not touching the pitcher’s plate; (8) The pitcher unnecessarily delays the game; (9) The pitcher, without having the ball, stands on or astride the pitcher’s plate or while off the plate, he feints a pitch; (10) The pitcher, after coming to a legal pitching position, removes one hand from the ball other than in an actual pitch, or in throwing to a base; (11) The pitcher, while touching his plate, accidentally or intentionally has the ball slip or fall out of his hand or glove; (12) The pitcher, while giving an intentional base on balls, pitches when the catcher is not in the catcher’s box; (13) The pitcher delivers the pitch from Set Position without coming to a stop. Gee Blake, I see no mention of different rules for right and left handers. I also do not see a rule that moving your free foot first is a balk.

Under MLB rules, if you disengage the rubber (like you're talking about) you become a fielder and can throw or fake to any base. If you're on the rubber, you can step and throw (jump turns like you see in this video fit under this category) to any base. If you step and throw to first or third, you have to throw the ball to the base. You can fake it to second.

Litch 01 To follow up, I got curious and checked it out, the step towards third and throw to first pick off move was outlawed for the start of the 2013 season. So, more than just a few years ago. Time flies.
