"Starship troopers may have been a satire!" - in other news, the sky is BLUE! :D Seriously, only an idiot would think otherwise. Even back when I first saw this in 1997 it was obvious to me. Pretty heavy handed with the commercials.

Back in 1997 I totally thought this movie was ripping off Starcraft and wondered why Blizzard isn't sueing them. Of course then I did not know about Warhammer or how Blizzard ripped them off first. AT any rate this movie would have been far better if it was a Starcraft movie. Just change the uniforms and add the Protoss instead of Neil Patrick Harris. :)

Fun fact: the whole whipping set up has historical precedence. Flogging was a form of punishment given to soldiers who broke military code. In the British military during the Napoleonic Wars, 10-15 was the standard punishment, but the maximum a soldier could be given was 1,200. In such an extreme fascist society such as the one in this movie, there's very likely a traditionalist ethos that allow for these sorts of archaic punishments to be doled out in a modern context. Heck, in reality many militaries had flogging as a punishment up until 1879.

Starship Troopers was a Verhoeven film, like Robocop. There are tons and tons of layers you can strip away, and it is actually an awesome movie that succeeds admirably in being cynical towards fascism and blind nationalism, just as Robocop succeeded in warning against commercialization and giving corporations too much power.

Future propaganda? It's already basically it... The film merely caricatures it... The US is already a fascist country, the film merely makes this a parody of what the US army already is. Like the alien insects are already a parody of Iraqis and Venezuelans...

    • Wesley

      25 dias atrás

+sinekonata right, it might be why American audiences didn't get the jokes at first

    • sinekonata

      25 dias atrás

+Wesley What I meant is that the caricature is not that of a hypothetical future US society but a caricatured portrayal of what it already is. And no it's not way more complicated, the film is pretty accurate and a barely distorted version of US foreign relations and domestic acceptance of racist imperialism.

    • Wesley

The Book deal with two main plots. Power Armor and the change of Johnny from a Civilian to a Soldier to a Warrior. Then there is a subplot of the justification for the government and how as Johnny changes, his view of the government changes. Now I did not expect the political Subplot but I thought we get one of the main plots. But No we get a 90210 episode set in a fictional military. If this movie had been call Bug Hunt as the original script was titled , I would have enjoyed it more, but it calls it self Starship Troopers. However it adapts none of the books main stories. It one of the all time worst adaptions ever.

    • Wesley

      25 dias atrás

unclepatrick2 almost everyone cast in starship troopers was cast due to their soulless, empty looks on their faces, since the idea is that the characters join the infantry because they want to become citizens and pursue their dreams, yet through the brainwashing and propaganda through training they become husks with no individuality who only kill bugs.

    • unclepatrick2

      25 dias atrás

The Shinning works because of Jack Nicolson performance. He is a good actor and it interesting to watch his take. The Three Leads in Starship Trooper are horrible . And why did they not do the Power Armor? That would have made the movie fun.

    • Wesley

Anyone else consider how the bugs can send asteroids half-way across the galaxy (about 50,000 light years) to strike a small blue planet? They would have had to launch them hundreds of thousands of years ago since it's not like they were moving at light-speed. Those bugs would have had to predict the human race to be an enemy, plot out the motion of the galaxy, the solar system, and Earth's path around the sun while taking into consideration any gravity wells along the way. They would then need to launching the asteroids at the perfect angle and at the perfect velocity to even have a hope in hell of striking the target. If this were a chess match, we'd be thinking one move ahead and they'd be planning how many ice cubes they'll have in their lemonade as they sit on the porch relaying to their kids how they kicked our asses in chess fifty years before. And I for one welcome our new insect overlords.
