The Ending Of Jordan Peele’s New Movie ‘Us,’ Explained

There’s a lot to unpack in the ending of “Us” - the second horror film from writer-director Jordan Peele, following his 2017 box-office hit “Get Out.” Here’s everything important that you might’ve missed at the end of the film - and our analysis of what the Big Twist really means. Be warned: There are some serious spoilers ahead.
“Us” puts a terrifying spin on the doppelgänger concept, and it’s full of social and political messaging in typical Peele-ian style. We break down the symbolism and hidden meanings, along with all the clever references Peele slipped into the film (what was with all those rabbits?). Plus, our explanation of how “Us” ties in to “Get Out.”
The cast of “Us” includes “Black Panther” co-stars Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke alongside Elisabeth Moss (“Handmaid’s Tale”) and Tim Heidecker (“Tim and Eric”). Nyong’o and Duke play Adelaide and Gabe Wilson, a married couple with two children (played by Shahadii Wright Joseph and Evan Alex). On a beach vacation in Santa Cruz, the four Wilsons find themselves under siege by a family of scissors-wielding invaders - who happen to look exactly like them. The night descends into chaos from there.
It’s all set to an unsettling soundtrack, which features a creepy reworking of Luniz’s “I Got 5 On It.” Other highlights include tracks from Janelle Monáe, The Beach Boys, and NWA.
“Us” is out in theaters now.

I believe that the movie is about identity. For the sake of simplicity, we will call the real Adelaide “Red” (the one who died at the end), and the fake one “White” (the one who lives at the end). For Adelaide’s parents, Red is the real Adelaide, but for Adelaide’s children, White is the real Adelaide. Identity is not fixed, but ever-changing and relative. Also how identity can be shaped and defined by the people around you. This could be willingly assimilating into a larger culture like White does (such as how POC children attempt to have disdain for or disregard their cultures just to fit in with the majority, like how some Black women in America wear weaves because of internalized racism-note, sometimes it is just a preference). Or it could be to forcefully to fit into a larger culture as Red does (such as how immigrants are forced to change the language they speak and the customs they follow which are seen as foreign in their new country). This could be shown in how White slowly becomes more human and can speak normally and how Red slowly becomes more like a doppelgänger and can barely speak/croaks (because she stops speaking and adopts the guttural croaking language of the doppelgängers). The fact that Red can barely speak could allude to minorities forgetting their mother tongue because of their assimilation into a White, English America. However, self-identity can never be taken from you because it is who you are inside. You can try to define yourself as someone/something else, but you cannot change your true nature/identity. This can be shown through Red’s becoming the doppelgängers’ leader through her mesmerizing dance (a symbol of her human identity). It could also be shown through White’s guttural growling when she kills one of the tethered twins (when Jason first notices something off about his mother). In the end, it is an interesting study on how identity is constructed or molded within people, especially in accordance with the people you are surrounded with and relative to other people.

I think that Pluto, Jason’s (the little boy) doppelgänger, has his face burned because Jason keeps trying to do his magic trick on an empty lighter, but every time he tries it, Pluto lights a match. And we can see the lighter being close to his face. So every time Jason tries flicking the lighter on, Pluto lights a match near his face. So eventually, Pluto got burned.

Great! Now explain why the “real” Adelaide’s entire life and every movement was determined by her tether rather than vice versa If tethers are emotionless how come we see the “fake” Adelaide cry and feel distraught? Is it even possible to teach these things to feel? If it was the real Adelaide who invaded the family’s home and gave a speech about her life, why did she describe herself as a tether? Why no mention of her switch if it was a strong enough motive to wage mass murder against all of humanity? Would the “real” Adelaide not mention ONCE throughout the entire movie that her life was stolen from her and that this is the reason for her anger and hatred towards her tether? Interesting, really

It's not like the door was locked. Also, Pluto had FREAKIN FIRE!!! So why is everyone eating raw bunnies?? Like even as a 6 year old I understood the concept of cooking with fire...

Something I have not seen anything on but thought as soon as it happened was when the white doppelganger (Josh's wife from the underground) came up to Lupita in the room, looked at her face and measured it with the scissors and then cut herself in the same fashion. That HAS to be a Get Out reference of white people wanting or envying black people right?

Another theory is that the two boys got switched because at the beginning the boy, Jason, couldn’t get the magic trick right it’s because he never actually played with it and the underground boy , Pluto , burnt his face by trying to play with the magic trick that he didn’t have anymore so he substituted it with matches this also explains why when both of the boys went to the closet Pluto automatically wanted Jason to get out the magic trick because he missed playing with it and this is why at the end jason didn’t say anything about knowing that his mom was actually the underground woman because he knew they did the same thing to the above ground person. This also explains why at the beginning the boy or the mom couldn’t get on beat.

Okay a lot doesn’t add up how come she didn’t just escape? Why were they eating bunnies. Where were the “Government” people who controlled the experience? Why did the white clones kill their family quicker? why didn’t the police never show up(don’t say because their clones were killing the police when a patrol car would of been on their way to the house)? their are tunnels under ground but not enough for millions of clones to live in silence. how come the clones didn’t die from years of eating raw meat? the human body doesn’t accept raw meat in its system( and even if it somehow did for some reason these people would of grown long canine teeth to adopt to the condition) but we are not cavemen anymore those clones should of had parasites and all types of health issues? If the clones were smart enough to take orders and follow a leader why were they so self distinctive? A lot more didn’t add up about how the characters were so strange, I don’t like a lot of the dialogue because people in real life don’t talk or act like that. But this movie was strange and didn’t make a whole lot of sense it had major plot holes.

I liked the concept👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻; however, I think that the scene of the ballerinas was too long... it just bored and disappoint me. It's like too much time for little action. I don't know how to explain it. From 1 to 10, being 10 the best, I rate this movie: 8. ☺✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻✌🏻. I still would like to watch another movie from Jordan Peele. A lot of people expected this to be an actual horror movie. What I got from the movie is that we aren’t happy and we don’t stay true to ourselves. I noticed that in many scenes, the daughter was an amazing runner but she didn’t want to do anything with track. She was instead, always in her phone. The father wanted to be so much like the family friend but the family’s friends weren’t happy at all either. The scene at the beach when when both mothers are talking to each other, the white mother tells Lupita that she wish she could kill her husband lmao. & when her double sees Lupita’s husband killing her husband she starts crying but immediately starts to laugh. (Sorry I’m bad with their scene names because I was so focused on the movie)

So many plotholes. The mirror world was at the vacation town... they come back home from vacation to their regular town... and then she goes back to the mirror world? If the fake one escaped... why would she be killing the other mirror people? Also, if the mirror one was the bad one, why was she afraid to go back if that was her home. Like most horror movies, it all falls apart when they try to explain it at the end. A lot of good ideas, but didnt work when put together as a whole as a sum of its parts.

My friends and I all saw it last night and without trying to sound too big headed we all caught the plot twist at one point or another quite early on. 1) At the very start when the mother says she "just wants her daughter back" leading us to believe this isn't the same person 2) I personally caught it when the two families meet. How was she the only one who could speak english? Why does she have such a vendetta against humans? Everything points towards a switcheroo.

Also notice how Red seemed to be the better more graceful ballerina. She was always tip toeing around and during the fight scene Adelaide just couldn’t quite get her hands on Red as she kept dancing circles around her. Adelaide said she stopped dancing because she “ burned out at 14 “ but Red was prancing around like a ballerina still up until her last moments. Wow! I have to watch it again.
