THE UNICORN STORE WAS TERRIBAD

The Unicorn Store has somehow transcended "bad." And "terrible."
It has coalesced into a new, more horrible thing...the TERRIBAD.
ITS OKAY TO BE A MANCHILD WELL INTO ADULTHOOD DUH
OBSERVATION:
People have pointed out that the negative space in the first third of the discussion is, in fact, Kit. And I thin that's right, I agree with that observation. The shot is good on a technical level.
The assignment was still OFF THE MARK and the message of the movie is still TERRIBAD.

Failure is part of the learning process. When you fail at something it's an opportunity to look back at your mistakes and improve yourself going forward. But that's the thing... it's just an opportunity. If you fail at something, shrug your shoulders and say, "I guess I'm just a failure." then not only are you not growing as a person, you're nurturing negative habits that will actively inhibit your success in the future. Celebrating failure is fine. Failure can help you realize that you aren't cut out for something. Maybe chasing a degree in one of the hard sciences is too taxing for your mental fortitude. Maybe the career you're pursuing doesn't gel with you're personality and you're making yourself miserable by soldiering through it. Maybe you've rushed into a relationship in your early-twenties and now you're engaged to someone who you don't love because you felt left behind by your married peers. Maybe a failed business venture put your brand in the hot-seat for an underdog comeback story. Whatever the case may be, sometimes failure can play such an overwhelmingly positive role in a person's life that it dramatically increases their quality of life once a change has been acted upon. But that isn't what this movie is about. Its message is, "Yes, the world is wrong and you are right. You do you, girl! Now double down and go make a scene in public." Tl;dr This movie is sending its target audience, who I can only assume are 16-20yo college students, the wrong message about life by only reiterating what they want to hear.

Good analysis, but sometimes failure is a mark of success. If you are working towards something that is true and difficult, the world will beat you down. That doesn't mean that you are heading in the wrong direction.

I’m disappointed that you typed up this whole paragraph about failure but then paraphrase the message of the movie, however incorrect or not, in simple sentences. Makes me think you just want something to hate about this movie.

I disagree on what your saying about the message of the movie. I think her movie reflects individuality more than it reflects that the world is wrong and you are right. It’s thinking that the world is wrong for rejecting you than making your failures a positive. I think that the movie represents failure about how making lifestyle changes/choices in your life are not always in YOUR best interests and while they may seem right and just at the time, don’t reflect what you’d like to be doing with your life. For instance, the whole movie we see her getting rejected which makes her doubt her art career, then decide to work at the office. She wants to pitch a vacuum advertising campaign or whatever you call it for the vacuum because she thought that was the only thing she was capable of. She thought her future was bleak and depressing. And maybe Brie’s directing style was unique to that thought of the character. We see her fail and try her best, I’m not sure what you mean by “make a scene,” but if your talking about that scene in the office with all the glitter then I think your opinion is a little misguided. Constantly throughout the movie I was thinking that the unicorn was more of a reflection of her life, of her, than an actual animal she was trying to obtain. She was trying to obtain her passion again and finally doing what she wanted to do. When that scene at the end where Kit finally saw the unicorn, and she was talking about all these stories that she had with the unicorn, I realized that as a kid I felt alone growing up and that I always read books, played with animals, and had a huge imagination. The unicorn friend that kit had, (and she is an only child, that means a lot in this context), was a personification of her identity. The movie wasn’t saying that the world is wrong, go be yourself. It was saying to be yourself despite your failures in this world. Isn’t that why THIS IS ME became a hit song?

Was there ever a statement made about the message of this movie from the director or anything? Like were they deliberately going for the 'you're perfect as you are' trope even in the state of immaturity and possible mental problems? Because what infuriated me about this is the complete lack of relatibility and responsibility that is SUPPOSED to be instilled, especially in this day and age of millenials and it's not even intended as a comedy is what makes it worse. I understand the beginning, growing up and becoming an adult sucks, but sadly that's the way of the world but that doesn't make it wrong, if everyone acted like Kit however, humanity would be dead in the glitter filled water. On the subject, Kit is an absolute mess of a protaganist and I worry for anyone who sympathises with her, because her character doesn't just sound immature, but mentally unstable and just outright selfish in her actions who as far as I saw never changed or grew at the end, she still remained immature, selfish and still possibly brain damaged. The fact that all her issues and challenges in this shitshow of a movie are instantly resolved behind the scenes by a love interest and a family she shrugged off for not believing in her is more unrealistic than the fucking unicorn and as I said at the start of this comment is not a hope anyone should take on board.

What really bothered me in the movie was how stereotyped the side characters were. I understand that in some movies it's meant to be like that, but the way it's set up makes it reek "I'm not like OTHER girls" even more so than it did before. How all the women are made to be superficial and how quickly the men are supposed to fall for her carwash wearing behind. The "creepy" boss part made me feel uncomfortable, especially when Kit asked something along the lines of "Am I pretty enough to be sexually harassed?"

3:55 This is me looking way too much into this shitty movie, but in answer to the question "where is the negative space in her painting?" I might guess that maybe the entire painting is supposed to be a background of negative space, while her actual physical body, splattered with various colors and dressed in a childish outfit, is the subject of the painting. She is showing herself as she believes she actually is, actually using her own body as part of the medium she is working with, and she's making the statement, "I am art" and maybe even, "we can all be art." Or at least, that seems like something that this character would have said, and then been heartbroken that her instructors didn't "get it."

1:10 Never thought just the word 'is' could make me laugh as hard as that. Like, crying, I can't breathe laughter, life threatening laughter. If I was driving I'd have to pull the car over so I don't run someone down... Imagine that, imaging being the pedestrian, there you are, crossing the road with your little green walk light, and here's this car that comes hurtling at you at 60kmh, you know they're facing a stop signal, but they're not slowing down, startled you look at the car and as it gets closer the driver's face comes into view, and it's the happiest laughing face you've ever seen, giant wide smile and tears running down their face, this face overwhelmed with joy coming to kill you... Wouldn't that be the worst way to die? Imagine the last thing you ever think being 'What's so funny?'

The Unicorn Store = Reality Bites for the Millenial Generation. Where Winona Ryder gets queried by a job interviewer as she gets on an elevator going down, after bombing an interview: "define the word 'irony'" which Winona is "ironically" unable to do, Brie Larsen gets on an elevator going down after getting justifiably fired from a job, carrying a rainbow colored box full of her scorned aspirations. She too is just misunderstood, but at least she had the job, and her angst - instead of being clothed in black, is splashed with rainbows. Winona finally ended up getting a job in the end, while Brie gets a unicorn. Brie - from some of her recent comments and interactions with men like Chris Hemsworth - seems to be seething with - um, how to put this? - frustrated resentment toward "white dudes," so it is rather odd that the object of her desire in this film is a white horse with a horn on its head.. The implicit psycho-sexual implications of this are rather sad .. Poor, poor Brie. I hope she gets herself sorted out before she impales herself, her career, on that horn ..

I know it's a really unpopular opinion on a video like this, but I really enjoyed the movie. It resonated with me a lot because I myself am an artist (college student by the way). And as a *young adult* who loves to draw and paint, I came to the hard conclusion that I probably couldn't do what I love to make a living in real life. I feel like I had a lot in common with the protagonist and how she wanted to stay in a fairytale land and a child. So I generally liked the artistic struggle of the character because I saw myself in her. BUT I HATED THE FACT THAT SHE DIDN'T TAKE THE UNICORN IN THE END!!!!! UGHHHH!😤😡

Im only going to say this, that I LOVED this movie. The unicorn didn't necessarily have to be real, it could be a psycologic symbol, the shop too. I loved how they pictured creativity here. And the girl, in fact DID grow up at the end of the movie. Just because she kept wearing colorful clothes dosen't mean she didn't. She left the unicorn, which meant she didn't need extra love or psycological backup anymore. She matured emotionally, but kept her imagination and uniqueness. That's admirable. And the teacher had earned all his fame by photographing sticks inside boxes so dont think of him as the hero. What Kit did in one scene was better than anything he'd done in his life. Dissobeying the rules, not following instructions are tropical things in good artists. Surely she wasn't doing " whatever", maybe she thought herself as what she painted, in an artistic or symbolic language. Its typical in gifted artists, I know it from personal experience. Its a meaning full movie very few people can understand.

Missing the point of an art project and not even trying to take the effort comprehend the description of a project doesn't make people feel sorry for you it just makes you look like a dipshit.LOL😆😆😆😆😆😆😆

*Good flawed main character:* I can't believe I made that mistake, but I think it's best for me to learn from that and try not to repeat it in the future so I won't intentionally hurt the people I love and care about~ *Unicorn Store main character:* I've made so many mistakes in my life~! but it's okay cause that's what makes me *unique* !! I just want my unicorn~! I want it! I want it! I WANT IT!! don't care about my parents nor having a healthy life!! *I JUST WANT MY WHITE GLITTERY UNICORN!!!!* [insert last minute moral message]

I don't mind her rainbow art. If she really love art she shouldn't be constrained by society that she feel the need to get an art degree! Just sell her stuff through devinatart or insta or something ya know. Smh no one care if an artist have a degree or not, that's the most worthless degree ever.

When Samuel L. Jackson accepts to act in your movie, you'll know it'll either be utter shit or fantastic. But normally, when he makes a movie that's utter shit, it's so shit it becomes good again. In this case however, even he couldn't save Brie Larsons level of shit shoveling.

You mean it went through the Samuel L Jackson shit cycle 1.5 times? Or are we seeing unprecedented levels of Shatts (Shit + Watts) due to Brie?
