Funny these are the same people that come to the ED with back pain, knee pain, foot pain, joint pain, etc. You know what? I have those pains too, it’s cuz I’m on my feet all day, it happens. But it’s going to happen MORE if you carry extra weight!! The Laws of Physics DONT DISCRIMINATE!! You can ABSOLUTELY tell someone’s health by looking at them!!! Not in every situation, and you can’t predict the future. But as a general rule YES YOU CAN!

I agree diets do not work. The word diet implies you are temporarily changing your eating habits. If you want to be healthy you need change your life style in way that is sustainable for you!

I faced this. I was sleeping 16 hours a day, and still tired. For FIVE YEARS. I get to the doctor and rather than giving me a referral to a specialist, he says I need to lose weight--your diet is the cause. It took me months longer to gain enough energy to see another doctor, so I could get a referral to a specialist. Real diagnosis? Severe idiopathic central sleep apnea. My diet is irrelevant.

Implying that being obese is perfectly natural and not a heath risk and that they are simply "thicc" is irresponsible. Doctors should not tiptoe around the subject of patients weight. Especially when it has such an enormous impact on patient health. Slightly overweight is one thing but If you are obese, YOU ARE NOT HEALTHY.

I don’t really think it’s prudent to pander to idea of health at every size either. Analogously, if this were a discussion about doctors “shaming” Anti-Vaxxers for their health decisions, the conversation we’d be having would be much different. We have countless studies on the health consequences of obesity: type 2 diabetes, coronary artery disease, in addition to countless joint and vertebral subluxations. If people could put their feelings aside and absorb the facts, the transition to a healthy lifestyle will be much better. Trust your physicians, they really do have your best interests.

Not to mention the disease processes where obesity while not directly responsible for can increase the severity of, such as asthma or COPD, and that's just focusing on the respiratory system. Please Sam, stick to politics and comedy and leave the health advice to people that you know, are actual health care professionals.

My doctor has been telling me to watch my weight since I was eight or nine. Sometimes I truly believe that if I hadn’t started becoming so concerned about it then, I wouldn’t be as overweight now. It’s true that weighing less is healthier but just saying “lose weight” without really giving advice on how is not helpful, because it’s very difficult to do-especially for women.

Oh Samantha, you are usually pretty much on the target. With as much care and love for friends around, a morbid/obese BMI is a recipe for disaster. It might not be what kills people, but it is a big part of it. Claiming otherwise is probably as uneducated as claiming the earth is flat and as dangerous as statement that it normalizes a social issue. |I don't think that Americans or People in the UK or in Indonesia (or Samoa island and all the fattest countries in the world) are mentally and emotionally weaker than the rest of the planet, I do believe that a lack of strict regulation in food product manufacturing and selling is creating these issues. If anything it is the number one cause of early death world wide. Pandering to feelings and simple case of misjudgment do not change that issue. I would have loved if you did a piece studying different countries and BMI and lifestyles and diets (as a life style) and the impact of low cost food on people. This is a tax on the poorest of us. I wish for all of us to be healthy and happy .... "thicc and fabulous" doesn't mean anything to me.

The rarity of weightloss maintenance could be the result of most people using crash diets, I think we should promote healthy gradual weight loss through safe lifestyle changes instead of assuming that it's a lost cause. Not addressing the problem at all is better than shaming and crash diets, but inspiration and education is even better.

I don't smoke. I don't drink alcohol. I don't take any drugs. I don't even take supplements other than vitamins and minerals for the immune system. I don't eat fast food. I rarely eat out, and if I do I order lean meat with no sauces as well as vegetables and water. The only liquids I drink include water, coffee (black) and the occasional sparkling water for flavor (no additives). I exercise 5 days a week minimum for at least an hour. I get a good healthy 8 hours of deep sleep a night. My food consumption is 4-6 meals a day that are each about half of what an average "meal" is so I'm never over eating. I'm the healthiest I've ever been. So if you're obese, stop eating so much and go get healthier (aka put down the french fries).

Glad you are looking at weight issues - obesity is usually a result of food addiction - there are programs that help - I lost weight 9 years ago and gratefully kept it off on this 12 step program. Food addiction isa disease similar to alcoholism or drug addiction - OA or FA or any food addiction program can be very helpful. Diets don't work - I tried them for years and years from weight watchers to Jenny Craig to the cabbage soup diet - etc. etc.

As someone formerly 100+ lbs overweight, who has kept it off over 7 years now, I'm so glad i didnt watch something this factually incorrect and uninspiring when I was at my lowest point. If i had, i may have not had the courage to climb such a seemingly insurmountable mountain and change the way i eat. Diets don't work, changin the way you eat does. But to stand there and imply that morbidly obese people are not unhealthy, and that they should not be confronted about that fact by the people they pay to look after their health (Dr) out of fear of uncomfortable emotions is downright disgusting. Getting healthy was the best and hardest journey i ever made. It took years. And i made it because i did feel some shame over the state of my body. Shame isnt always bad, it can be a very powerful motivator. I hope shame can motivate you to be more careful about the nature of the content you produce.

There are two documentaries about Star Trek fandom hosted by Denise Crosby called "Trekkies." The first one was released to theaters, the second one went direct to video and pay TV. In the first one we see a lot of overweight fans. While watching the second one, which was filmed entirely at Star Trek conventions in Europe, I realized something which goes unmentioned in the narration. In the documentary shot in Europe there were no overweight people! It is called lifestyle. Americans often have an unhealthy lifestyle which leads to obesity. In Michael Moore's film about different cultures he visited a school in France and found that not only do schools there not serve fast food, the children don't even like American soft drinks. When he had children taste Coca cola they hated the taste of it! I noticed that in Samantha Bee's justification for obesity she doesn't mention that when obese people get older they have problems with their legs and feet because the body starts wearing down from carrying all that excess weight.

I quick search revealed several studies citing obesity as an important risk factor for cancer (and all sorts of other diseases). There is no such thing as being overweight and healthy. Being overweight is metabolic disfunction. It is the result of the terrible diet advice we have been given (whole grain, etc) and the ever more degrading food quality. Two words: Intermittent fasting. That is the most important starting point for fixing a broken metabolism. Along with whole unrefined foods.

Diet aside, even if everything Sam said on that topic (despite saying she still condones a healthy diet for everyone) feels like a disservice to her audience, it shouldn't take away from how alarming it is Doctors ignore other symptoms for the 'obesity caused this' diagnosis when its not a logical conclusion every time. Everyone knows one overweight person who im sure they love, and we just need to expect they get the same level of care for illness and injury that any other person gets when visiting a Doctor.

+Domagoj Tumpić Diet (as the composition of food intake) is appropriate is quite different than "Diet" (as a change of diet--usually temporary--as a means of losing weight or becoming "healthier"). I think we may be discussing quite different things here, so I won't be as snide as I usually am. Fair warning, I am a vegetarian (and have been for a VERY long time) and former vegan (due to laziness and lack of will, not for any health or dietary reasons); thus, I am not disputing the viability nor the reasons behind such a plant-based diet. My objection comes in the relevance to the points of the video--specifically "diets" and the misconception that you can't be healthy if you are overweight (and, of course, that not being overweight, or even just eating only a plant-based diet, assures you ARE healthy).
