MMA is crazy and unpredictable and it's why we love it. Anything can happen and we saw two fights (Wonderboy, JJ Aldrich) where one fighter is showing dominance and control, winning the fight and they make ONE error which costs them everything.

ummm.. it was actually his lowered hands that did it, not necessarily leg movement. You need to defense cover hands up after a kick if you're gonna kick that close and not retract. That is martial art 101 dude lol wtf.

Guys, I already knew petis was gonna catch him with a right hand. I called it weeks ago. I was like "Yep, there's the leg kicks to slow him down and here comes the superman pun-" *WHAM!* And everyone just looked at me like how'd he know? "Well, I'm a MMA genius" I said. They all stood up and clapped.

Wonderboy was beating Pettis at every turn. Out striking him at will. I don't think the leg kicks played a factor. Pettis needed to close the distance on Wonderboy and take advantage of Wonderboy's point fighting style which is traditionally hands down, and the superman punch which makes you think a knee or kick is coming only to reveal the cross or right hook in this case was how Pettis did it.

That was just a lucky shot and I no that’s all it takes but you fight them against each other five time and 4 out of five wins will go to wonder boy I beat you that to because Anthony is never the same fighter in every fight sometimes he will come in a fight great but most of the time anymore the great Anthony doesn’t show up to fight and all I can say is that luck happens every now an then just like the sun shines on a dogs asshole every now and then to and I would love to see a rematch of this fight to

Great breakdown Weasel! I just want to add that Pettis is real good at putting together an unorthodox solution. 1st he missed a straight right hand. Then he missed a long right hook. An off-heel right hand also failed. So in the final sequence: we have a jumping-long-right-hook-off-the-fence, literally combining the prior 3 punches into one killer blown!

Oh boy...nothing wrong with Wonderboys footwork. There are 2 MAIN types of directional foot work in striking: step-drag (the more traditional of the 2), and drag-step (often called a shuffle step or hop and it is VERY commonly used for setting up a wide array of techniques--kicks and lead hooks especially). Wonderboy's footwork was the latter, and was perfectly fine. He just incorrectly gauged the range on his counter and ended up on the bad end of a trade. Just because something is a no no in novice boxing instruction doesnt mean it is an error.

like your comments-also ive always advised fighters with that sort of side kick to raise lead shoulder block and boxing trick of holding the rear guarding hand even further in front of head when facing someone in opposite lead- wonder boy did neither-hope im not too confusing-chow

Kinda pathetic... someone should give him a heads up. For the better y'know? He is still out of it by the looks of things. One of those knock outs that he will feel years from now.

👋😯👍 excellent analysis...I didn't even notice this myself. It has not come up on any interviews or other analysis/breakdowns I have watched. Pettis mentioned the chop the leg gameplan but this takes things to another level. It looks like a habit he might have a very difficult time correcting since it's probably in the "muscle memory." I like Wonderboy and I hope he watches this video and makes adjustments.

I think a major factor to Wonderboy getting knocked out with that shot was that his head was turned as far as it can go to his right. He was unable to move his head away from the punch, resulting in his head taking the full force.

I don’t like the last comment. Size matters and the one flaw in Weasle’s about fighters moving up is the numbers game. Fighters are moving up for a fight, but not staying at weight and fighting. Can you imagine what the wrestlers would do to Pettis? They’d kill him. Look at Conor. He was a dominate fighter at 145, but he was 2 n 2 at 155 bc of the bigger fighters. Moving up is very hard and very sustainable long term once u start fighting killers.

3:56, the fuck are you seeing there. Of course he has to move back with his right foot first, he's already elongated, he'll be put at a massive bio-mechanical disadvantage following your 'break down' for an easy chase down knock out. IF it was as simple as that then every body would have got him. The reason why pettis got the jump on him was his subtle bounce on the octagon before he went for the superman, giving him that extra distance. If this schumuk can make break down videos then I better start. Shit.

      28 dias atrás

He relies on in-and-out footwork to backpedal from strikes. That's the point-karate way, they don't like keeping their hands up. Leg kicks took their toll, and you'll see Pettis' right hand getting closer and closer as the fight goes on.

So at 3:30 you are saying to bring his left foot back first? That's impossible when at that moment all of his weight was on it. By getting his right foot out of there was the only way he could move. In retrospect his biggest mistake(s) at that split second was failing to either block the punch with either of his free arms, move his head, or both

Think you missed a pretty big part of this, Pettis was countering constantly with the rear leg kick (across the body a lot to the rear leg as well) and the "entry" to the superman punch is essentially a feinted rear kick. Wonderboy was expecting another leg kick (and tries to counter with a right hook leaving the lane right down the pipe). Pretty brilliant setup by Pettis. Also, Dukes brother Rick learned the leg kick heavy strategy vs a karate fighter firsthand when he got wrecked by a Thai back in the eighties with the same strat. If you listen to Duke in between rounds he's calling for Anthony to finish every counter/combo with the leg kicks. Just some food for thought.

Thank you weasle excellent breakdown I really appreciate it all the time , now if you remember when Woodley fought Thompson Woodley was also fighting and pulling from the cage and pettis did the same thing but Thompson got really comfortable with that sidekick which caused Pettis to get a full strong right , my point being is both Woodley and Pettis use the same tactic I believe being from the same camp and it worked perfectly to break down a karate style fighter I believe the best way is to attack the legs now with a karate fighter always bouncing up and down on their legs they have no time how to check a leg kick so Anthony being the smart fighter William Muay Thai style attacked both the inside and outside legs and set up his right people may say it's a lucky punch but if you break this down like you did they will understand he was attacking the legs first,...... thanks weasle

I like both guys, neither one more than the other. But watching this fight gave me no doubt wonderboy wins 19 times out of twenty. Human beings, unfortunately, have mushy brains that are susceptible to swishing against the inside of a very hard surface. And sometimes it doesn't matter who it is that hits who, if it happens to land in a certain way then it's sleepy time. My take of the fight was showtime didn't hurt wonderboy at all in the fight (not one leg kick really hurt him) so at the end of the round, with time winding down, wonderboy decided to just go forward instead of the counterstriking he was doing throughout the rest of the fight as pettis was hurt and not hurting him. Thompson landed the side kick but it slipped off to the side. Thompson expected Pettis to be more or less done for the round at that time and relaxed his brain then pettis relaxed it bigtime.
